RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
