A person who laced sweets with sedative and gave them to children at a summer camp in the region has pleaded guilty to sexual offenses against two young males aged nine and ten years old.

The defendant was taken into custody after eight children and a grown-up fell ill at the location in July.

The 76-year-old, from the Nottinghamshire area, admitted guilt to a total of 17 charges when he was present at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he disputed one particular crime he was facing, which was involving a young boy.

The defendant was held in detention ahead of a further hearing on November 28th.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, detailed Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She stated his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a youth camp which he operated.

The man played a "candy game" with the children, the prosecutor explained, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".

She told the court Ruben had played this game with the young males "for many years", and children had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She stated the defendant had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had concerns in summer 2025.

The prosecutor added: "Recently" his stepson had worries about what was going on, for good reason.

"They resolved" to examine in the man's possessions."

Mrs Prior KC stated items including lubricant, Vaseline and injection devices were discovered, and his stepson alerted the authorities about his concerns.

She explained the defendant proceeded to engage in the "candy game" with six youngsters that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the following morning.

"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that point," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was reviewing Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.

The prosecutor stated the minors were struggling to walk due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson notified the law enforcement once more.

She said the defendant then engaged in the "treat game" in a area of five children.
