More than two dozen Olympic champions, trainers and further world-class competitors have put their names to a letter calling for a stop to the death penalty of a boxing champion and instructor, who is on death row in the nation.

Increasing Worldwide Condemnation

Amid increasing international outrage over the country's increasing application of the death penalty as a means of oppression, the forcefully phrased appeal denounces the authorities's ruling to maintain the execution order of the athlete.

The athlete, 30, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was taken into custody for being involved in national uprisings in the year 2019 and charged of backing an opposition group. He has passed half a decade in incarceration, where he has been abused and kept in isolation.

“Competition is designed to encourage faith, togetherness, and courage,” the supporters expressed. “The capital punishment of a winner for his beliefs is a blatant attack on these principles and a caution to all sportspeople who ventures to express dissent.

Pattern of Putting to Death Competitors

The letter pointed out that the athlete's situation was not an isolated one and highlighted Iran’s past of executing sports champions for their views, such as a national team leader, skipper of the national football team, and a volleyball captain, skipper of the female volleyball side. In the year 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year national competitor, was put to death.

Other endorsers to the letter consist of a yachting pioneer, who captained the pioneering all-female crew in a global yacht race and was the first woman to earn a renowned sailing award; the ex- skipper of the national squad an athlete; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the Iranian squad for the global tournament.

Apprehension and Flawed Legal Process

The boxer was arrested in March 2020. The allegations against him entailed “spreading corruption on Earth through incendiarism and ruin of public property”. His sentence has been reversed multiple times but on October 4 it was upheld on the third attempt. His trial was denounced as “highly unjust” by advocates and organizations.

Appeal to UN

The urging to prevent the athlete's capital punishment is subsequent to a previous appeal to the global human rights chief for rights, endorsed by more than one hundred advocates and groups, demanding intervention to stop the athlete’s capital punishment.

Death Penalty Surge

According to findings, there is an “death penalty surge in the country, which has attained horrific levels”. In two thousand twenty-three, officials put to death at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a 48% increase on 2022. In the prior period, statistics showed nine hundred seventy-two executions, representing the peak figure since 2015. More than eight hundred people have been executed so far in the current year.

Political prisoners and dissidents are targets, particularly in the wake of the 2022's uprising. Analysts say the regime have used the capital punishment to stifle dissent, instil apprehension among the public and tighten their hold on authority.
